The best-protected anchorage in Miami and the one every local knows, a mangrove-ringed basin inside a state park, a short walk from the Cape Florida lighthouse and an ocean beach, with a genuinely good waterfront restaurant at the head of it. Manatees come into the harbour in winter. Once a bird rookery, the harbour was cut and bulkheaded for boat access and is now the anchoring heart of Key Biscayne. The surrounding park was Florida's most-visited state park before Hurricane Andrew flattened it in 1992; the Australian pines were replaced with native planting in the rebuild. Anchorage: A landlocked natural basin with excellent shelter in every direction and 3m+ throughout. Room for roughly 25 boats. Boater's Grill at the head of the harbour, plus restrooms, showers and laundry. Hazards: Maximum two boats rafted together under park rules. The harbour entrance is narrow, watch for traffic.
