Europe's northernmost headland, a 307m cliff falling into the Barents Sea at 71°N, with the sun circling the horizon without setting for more than two months. At 'night' the light goes low and gold and stays there for hours. Puffin and gannet colonies at Gjesvær, and king crab in the fjords. Named North Cape by the English explorer Richard Chancellor in 1553 while searching for the Northeast Passage; he ended up in Russia and opened English-Russian trade instead. The cape became a Victorian tourist pilgrimage, King Oscar II visited in 1873 and the tourist trade has run ever since. Anchorage: Honningsvåg or Skarsvåg; rounding the cape needs a settled window. Hazards: Exposed Barents Sea headland with fast weather changes and 4-10°C water. Serious high-latitude passage-making.
