The site that made Japanese underwater macro photography, seahorses, frogfish, ghost pipefish, mating mandarinfish and seasonal oddities on a black volcanic slope dropping into Suruga Bay, Japan's deepest. Above water, Mount Fuji rises directly across the bay behind your exit, the most Japanese dive site imaginable. A sacred site for over a thousand years, the Osezaki shrine's grove of Japanese bay trees is a national monument and the freshwater pond on the spit, metres from the sea, has never been explained. Fishermen have prayed here for safe passage since the Heian period. Anchorage: Anchor in Uchiura Bay behind the Osezaki spit, well sheltered. Numazu is the port. Hazards: Water drops to 14°C in winter, wetsuit thickness matters. Suruga Bay is the deepest bay in Japan and the slope is steep.
