Twenty-odd wooded islets forming a maze of turquoise channels and coves a mile from Hvar's Venetian waterfront, with konobas built on the rocks and a botanical garden at Palmižana planted in the 1900s. The clearest water within reach of a nightlife town. The name comes not from 'hell' as often claimed but from pakline, the pine resin once harvested here to caulk ships. Palmižana's gardens were created by the Meneghello family, who have run the same estate since 1906 and turned it into an artists' colony. Anchorage: A chain of islets a mile off Hvar with dozens of coves. Palmižana has a marina; Vinogradišće, Ždrilca and Mlini are the anchorages. Hazards: Posidonia meadows are protected, anchor on sand. Heavy tender traffic in season.
