A 800m crescent of genuinely white sand backed by pine, in water so pale it reads Caribbean rather than Adriatic, the colour comes from the white sand bottom, not clarity alone. Overnight here and you get it to yourself. Dugi Otok, 'long island', is 45km long and barely 4km wide, with a population under 1,500 and villages that were farmed and fished for centuries. Sakarun's sand is unusual in Croatia, where almost every beach is pebble; it comes from eroded shell and limestone trapped in the bay. Anchorage: Anchor in 3-10m over white sand with superb holding. A favourite overnight in settled weather; run for Božava or Telašćica if it turns. Hazards: Exposed if the bura or a north-westerly sets in, have a bolt-hole.
