A cargo ship carrying sugar that went down in 2000, now collapsing into a reef at around 18m with batfish, snapper and jacks living in the wreckage, plus Gua Kambing, the goat cave, where cleaner shrimp will work on your hands if you hold them still. The east coast of peninsular Malaysia shuts for the north-east monsoon from November to February, boats are hauled out, resorts close and the islands empty. The Perhentians were a stopping point for traders waiting out exactly that wind. Anchorage: Anchor in the channel between the two islands, in water clear enough to see the anchor set, a standard east-coast Malaysian stop outside the monsoon. Hazards: The wreck is broken and silty inside, so penetration is for wreck-trained divers only.
