A 188ft vessel sitting perfectly upright and beautifully intact, with an enormous cable spool on the bow that has become the signature Keys wreck photograph. Silversides in clouds, goliath grouper, and a resident pair of huge jewfish under the stern. Built in 1942 as an army mine planter, later renamed Thunderbolt and used for cable-laying and lightning research, she was deliberately struck by lightning to study it. Scuttled in March 1986 and, because she was cleaned and prepared properly, she remains the most intact wreck on the trail. Anchorage: Mooring buoys; Boot Key Harbor at Marathon is one of the best anchorages in the Keys. Hazards: Depth and current; penetration requires training.
