The submerged royal quarter of Cleopatra's Alexandria, sphinxes, granite columns, statuary, the probable site of the Timonium where Mark Antony retreated after Actium, and blocks widely believed to come from the Pharos lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, scattered beneath Fort Qaitbay. Earthquakes in the 4th, 8th and 14th centuries and subsidence of the delta dropped Cleopatra's palace district into the harbour. The Pharos lighthouse, 100m+ tall, stood until a 1303 earthquake; its stones were used to build Fort Qaitbay in 1477, and more lie on the seabed around it. Franck Goddio's team has mapped the quarter since 1992. A long-discussed underwater museum project would make it publicly visitable. Anchorage: Alexandria harbour. Diving requires permits; visibility is often very poor and the harbour is industrially active. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
