Dozens of ships' anchors of every era lying together on the bay floor, cut away by vessels that had to leave in a hurry when the wind came in, a graveyard of iron in one sheltered bay, now a protected underwater park you swim through. Angra was the assembly point for the Spanish and Portuguese fleets returning from the Americas and the Indies, and the bay is exposed to the south. When a southerly blew up, ships slipped their cables and ran. Four hundred years of that left the floor of the bay covered in anchors. Anchorage: Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO World Heritage town and the classic Azorean anchorage, used by the Spanish treasure fleets for two centuries. Hazards: Protected archaeology, and harbour traffic overhead.
