An almost perfectly intact B-17 Flying Fortress sitting on white sand at 46m, wings spread, four engines and props in place, machine guns still mounted, the cockpit open. Widely considered the finest aircraft wreck in the world. Ran out of fuel returning from a raid on Rabaul in July 1943; the pilot ditched offshore and all nine crew were rescued by villagers who paddled out. Local people knew where she was for decades before divers located her in 1986. Anchorage: Remote Milne Bay anchorages; expedition logistics and village permission required. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
