The densest tarpon aggregation on earth, thousands of 45-90kg silver fish stacked in a deep pass, rolling on the surface at dawn, with a fleet of boats drifting over them. Even without a rod, watching hundreds of metre-and-a-half fish roll in a channel is extraordinary. Boca Grande has been the tarpon capital of the world since the 1880s and the pass hosts the sport's oldest tournaments. The deep scour hole, over 20m in places, far deeper than the surrounding Gulf, concentrates the fish. Phosphate ships once loaded here, which is why the pass was kept dredged. Anchorage: Fish or drift the pass; anchor in Boca Grande Bayou or Pelican Bay for the night. Hazards: Extreme tidal current, deep scour holes and heavy boat traffic in season. Not a swimming location.
