The oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County, an 1825 brick tower on a sand cape, seen best from the water where the whole 95ft rises straight out of the beach with nothing built around it. Combine with No Name Harbor, an ocean beach and the Stiltsville houses just south. Built 1825 and attacked in 1836 during the Second Seminole War, when keeper John Thompson and his assistant Aaron Carter were besieged in the tower; Carter was killed and Thompson survived by blowing up his own powder keg to draw a passing ship's attention. The cape was also a departure point on a little-known reverse Underground Railroad, where escaping enslaved people sailed to freedom in the British Bahamas. Anchorage: Anchor off the cape in 2-4m sand for the view, or run round into No Name Harbor for shelter and walk over. Hazards: Shoals off the cape, stay in deep water on the approach.
