A marble sanctuary to Apollo being excavated and re-erected on an uninhabited island, with column drums standing again after 2,500 years, and a shallow turquoise channel you anchor in to see it. Despotiko held a major Archaic sanctuary of Apollo, rival in importance to Delos', and was abandoned. Systematic excavation since the 1990s has re-erected parts of the temple. Ancient remains continue underwater in the channel, which was land when the sanctuary was built. Anchorage: Anchor in the shallow channel between Antiparos and Despotiko, on sand, with the excavation on the shore beside you. Both sides of the channel work depending on the wind, which makes it unusually flexible in a meltemi. Hazards: The meltemi accelerates through the channel; the archaeology ashore is an active dig and not a playground.
