A 110ft iron screw-pile tower standing alone in open ocean, nicknamed the Eye of Miami, the most striking man-made object on the Florida reef. Below it, reef in 3-6m and three 19th-century wrecks (Arratoon Apcar, Mississippi, Tarpon) within a few hundred feet, all snorkellable, with the Miami skyline just visible on the horizon. Completed in 1878 to replace the Cape Florida Light, built on iron piles screwed directly into living reef, engineering then considered impossible. It ran continuously for 137 years and was the last Florida reef light to be automated. Transferred to Biscayne National Park in 2012 and now awaiting restoration. Anchorage: No shelter, this is a settled-weather day run from Key Biscayne. Mooring buoys on the reef; do not anchor on coral. Hazards: Fully exposed with Gulf Stream current. The tower is closed to landing and structurally fragile.
