Reef sharks patrolling a wall that drops off the bank edge, a bird-covered cay you may not land on in nesting season, and the clearest water in the territory, the drop-off is minutes from the anchorage. French Cay was reputedly a base for the French privateer trade, and the Caicos Bank's shoal water made it a wrecking ground, dozens of ships lie on the reefs around its rim. Anchorage: French, Fish and Ambergris Cays on the rim of the Caicos Bank are the usual offshore anchorages, taken in settled trades and left before any front. Anchor on sand well clear of the reef. Hazards: An exposed cay on the edge of a bank with no shelter if it blows up. Reef sharks are habituated here, and there is no help nearby.
