Sir David Attenborough called this Australia's most unusual natural wonder. Two narrow gorges in a rock ridge through which an 11-metre tide forces itself, creating a horizontal waterfall up to four metres high that reverses direction twice a day. You watch, or transit it in a fast boat, and it is genuinely violent. The Kimberley has the largest tidal range in the southern hemisphere. The falls sit in Dambimangari country and are known as Garaanngaddim; the traditional owners regard them as the resting place of a creation serpent. Jumping and swimming were banned after safety incidents, and commercial transits are now tightly licensed. Anchorage: Anchor in Talbot Bay; the Kimberley has 11m tides, everything here is tide-planned. Hazards: Saltwater crocodiles, 11m tidal range, and lethal currents. Never swim. Transit the gaps only on the right tide with local knowledge.
