Millions of golden jellyfish that have evolved without predators and lost the ability to sting meaningfully. You swim through a soup of pulsing gold in a landlocked saltwater lake, jellyfish bumping harmlessly off your skin. There is nothing comparable anywhere. One of around 70 marine lakes in Palau's Rock Islands, cut off from the sea for roughly 12,000 years, long enough for the jellyfish to become a distinct subspecies that migrates across the lake daily following the sun. UNESCO World Heritage since 2012. Anchorage: Anchor in the Rock Islands lagoon; permit required, then a jungle hike over the ridge to the lake. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
