A red brick lighthouse on a 15m shell-mound hill, unusually high ground for Florida, above a turquoise inlet, with a sandbar inside, manatees in the river and goliath grouper aggregating offshore in late summer. The Gulf Stream sits barely a mile out, making this the closest deep blue water to the US mainland. The 1860 lighthouse was darkened during the Civil War when Confederate sympathisers removed its lighting mechanism and hid it up Jupiter Creek. It stands on a midden built by the Jeaga people. The wild and scenic Loxahatchee behind it is the last free-flowing river in southeast Florida. Anchorage: Anchor inside in 2-4m or run up the Loxahatchee. Do not attempt the inlet on an ebb with any east in the swell. Hazards: Jupiter Inlet is a genuinely dangerous entrance, it shoals, and breaks hard on an outgoing tide against an easterly swell. Take local advice or use Lake Worth Inlet instead.
