A Lycian-Byzantine town half in and half out of the water along a 500m stretch of shore, house walls, staircases descending into clear water, amphora fragments and quays, all visible from a tender in 2-4m. Above it, the castle and Lycian sarcophagi of Kaleköy, reachable only by boat. Simena and its neighbours were dropped into the sea by a 2nd-century AD earthquake, one of a series that reshaped the Lycian coast. The area is a Specially Protected Area, and diving and swimming over the ruins have been banned since the 1990s to stop looting. It is also one of the best anchorages in Türkiye, which makes it a rare double. Anchorage: Excellent, Kekova Roads is one of the finest natural anchorages on the Turkish coast, with all-weather shelter. Swimming and diving over the ruins is prohibited; boat viewing only. Hazards: Swimming and diving over the ruins is prohibited; boat viewing only.
