Volcanic seamounts rising from 500m to within a few metres of the surface, each one a self-contained coral cathedral. Kimbe Bay alone holds around 60% of all Indo-Pacific coral species. Barracuda schools, hammerheads on the outer bommies, pygmy seahorses, and an active volcano skyline above the water. Surveyed by The Nature Conservancy in the 1990s and found to be one of the most biodiverse bays on earth. Almost nobody dives here compared with Raja Ampat, PNG's logistics keep the numbers low and the reefs pristine. Anchorage: Sheltered bay anchorages ringed by volcanoes, a spectacular and rarely visited cruising ground. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
