Boats hang downward-facing lights that grow a plankton cloud, and 20-40 reef manta rays arrive to feed, barrel-rolling within centimetres of your mask, over and over, for an hour. You float on the surface holding a lit board. It is the single most reliable manta encounter in the world. Started by accident in the 1990s when divers noticed resort lights drawing plankton and mantas to the shoreline. Hawaii's Kona mantas are individually catalogued by belly-spot pattern, over 300 named residents, many tracked for 30 years. Anchorage: Anchor off Makako Bay/Keahole Point; Honokohau Harbor base. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
