Iguanas on the cay, a wall that drops into the Columbus Passage minutes from the anchorage, and the abandoned salinas of South Caicos ashore, a whole industrial landscape left to the flamingos. South Caicos raked salt for two centuries and its harbour was the territory's commercial centre. When the salt trade died the island emptied, which is why the anchorages are quiet and the reef is intact. Anchorage: Cruising guides name the lee of Long Cay as the best anchorage near South Caicos, with fuel and basic supplies a short run away at Cockburn Harbour. It is also the quiet end of the whole territory. Hazards: Park rules on anchoring, and the wall drops off fast on the ocean side.
