A whole town that stops for the sunset every single night, jugglers, a cat circus, tightrope walkers and a couple of thousand people on the pier, while a fleet of schooners tacks back and forth in front of it. From the water you get the sun going down over the Gulf with the entire spectacle as your backdrop. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square has run since the 1960s, when hippies and street performers began gathering; it is now formally organised by the Key West Cultural Preservation Society. Key West was for a time the richest city per capita in the United States, built on wrecking, salvaging ships off the reef. Anchorage: Fleming Key and Wisteria Island anchorages; Key West Bight and Stock Island marinas. Currents run hard through the harbour. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
