The largest accessible cruise liner wreck in the world, 176m lying on her starboard side with swimming pools, the ballroom, a grand staircase, the barber's shop and hundreds of cabins to penetrate. Multiple dives barely scratch her. Struck rocks off Cape Jackson in February 1986 after the local pilot took her through a channel far too narrow for her draught; 743 passengers and crew got off and one crewman died. The Soviet Union's flagship Pacific liner, and one of the strangest maritime blunders of the 20th century. Anchorage: Port Gore; the Marlborough Sounds offer excellent sheltered anchoring throughout. Hazards: Drysuit or thick wetsuit; viz 5-15m.
