Mitre Peak rising 1,692m straight out of the water, Stirling Falls dropping 151m onto your bow, fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins and bottlenose dolphins. Uniquely, the fresh water layer on top is so tannin-stained that deep-water species, black coral trees hundreds of years old, normally found at 100m+, grow at 10m. Divers see the deep sea in the shallows. Carved by glaciers, not rivers, which is why the walls are vertical. Rudyard Kipling called it the eighth wonder of the world. Milford was missed by Cook twice, the entrance is invisible from the sea. Fiordland is part of the Te Wāhipounamu UNESCO World Heritage area. Anchorage: Deep fjord anchorages with steep sides; Fiordland requires permits and biosecurity checks. Milford has moorings. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
