A 400km² reef that appears to rise out of the ocean as the tide drops, four metres of water pours off its top in sheets and cascades, turning the whole reef into a system of waterfalls. You tender up the internal channels while turtles, manta rays, sawfish and dugongs are flushed past you. There is nothing else like it on earth. Known as Yowjab to the Dambimangari people, who manage it under a joint arrangement with the state. Camden Sound is a humpback whale calving ground, one of the world's largest, with thousands of whales arriving between June and September. Anchorage: Anchor off the reef edge and tender into the channels on the falling tide. Hazards: Saltwater crocodiles, extreme tides, unmarked reef. Local knowledge or a licensed operator is essential.
