A pure white sandbank that surfaces in the middle of open turquoise water with no land visible, where boats set up a table and grill seafood on the sand while you stand knee-deep. Starfish and rays on the surrounding flats. 'Nakupenda' is Swahili for 'I love you'. Part of the Menai Bay Conservation Area, established in 1997 as Zanzibar's largest marine protected area after dynamite fishing devastated the reefs. Sandbank picnics have become the signature Zanzibar day trip, and the fees fund the conservation patrols. Anchorage: Anchor off in 5-10m and tender to the bank; check the tide table first. Hazards: The bank submerges completely on the flood, know the tide, and never leave anyone on it.
