The only place in Australia you can legally cage dive with great whites, and one of the most reliable on earth, 4-5m animals passing within a metre of the bars, drawn by a colony of 100,000 long-nosed fur seals. There is a surface cage for anyone and a floor cage at 25m for certified divers. The fur seal colony was hunted almost to extinction in the 1800s and its recovery brought the sharks back. Rodney Fox, attacked here in 1963 and survived with 462 stitches, became the pioneer of shark cage diving and filmed the live footage for 'Jaws' in these waters. South Australia banned chumming with blood and restricted operators to a handful. Anchorage: Anchor in the island lee; the crossing from Port Lincoln is exposed. Hazards: Southern Ocean swell makes the crossing rough; cage diving is strictly controlled.
