Visibility routinely over 70m, the clearest ocean water on earth, because there is no runoff from an island made entirely of raised coral limestone. Sea caves and chasms at Limu and Matapa, banded sea kraits (harmless to divers) in numbers, and humpback whales that come within metres of the shoreline to calve. Niue is one of the world's smallest self-governing states with around 1,700 residents, in free association with New Zealand. In 2022 it protected 100% of its EEZ under a conservation scheme selling 'ocean conservation credits', an entirely new financing model. Captain Cook was refused landing three times in 1774 and named it Savage Island. Anchorage: Moorings off Alofi, Niue has no harbour and no lagoon; the island drops straight into deep ocean. Untenable in westerlies and you may have to leave in a hurry. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
