Wooden hull timbers, frames and a keelson still recognisable in 4m of water, the oldest wooden wreck on the trail, and one of very few places in the Keys where you can see a wooden ship's actual structure rather than just iron. Wrecked on Delta Shoal in November 1842 carrying dry goods and furniture from New York. Key West wreckers salvaged her cargo, the wrecking industry made Key West the richest city per capita in the United States at the time. Divers long believed this was a slave ship; the identification as the North America came later. Anchorage: Mooring buoys on Delta Shoal. Hazards: Very shallow with persistent surge; go on a flat day only.
