Jacques Cousteau called it the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean and almost nobody outside Italy has heard of it. Uninhabited volcanic spires, white pumice cliffs, sea caves, cathedral-like rock arches and a single seasonal trattoria carved into the rock. Clear water with grouper and octopus on the obsidian reefs. A source of obsidian traded across the Neolithic Mediterranean, later a Roman exile island. Uninhabited today except in high summer, protected as part of a marine reserve. It stayed obscure because there is no ferry, you can only arrive by your own boat. Anchorage: Day and settled-night anchoring in Cala del Porto and O Francese; entirely exposed, no all-weather shelter. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
