The oldest submerged planned town in the world, streets, courtyards, building foundations and chamber tombs laid out on a sandy seabed in 4m of water, visible from a snorkel or from a drone. Roughly 5,000 years of continuous occupation is mapped here. Occupied from around 3000 BC, through the Minoan and Mycenaean periods, and submerged around 1000 BC by earthquake and subsidence. Discovered in 1904, mapped in 1968 by Nicholas Flemming, and digitally surveyed by Nottingham University in 2009 in a project that produced the first full 3D reconstruction of a sunken city. Anchorage: Anchor off Pounta / Elafonisos in sand. NOTE, the site is legally protected and swimming over it has been restricted, verify current access rules with Greek authorities.
