A 200m crescent of white tufa cliff, Chiaia di Luna, glowing above turquoise water, plus sea caves, natural pools at Piscine Naturali, and a pastel fishing harbour that has somehow escaped international tourism entirely. Roman tunnels cut through the cliffs. A Roman exile island, Nero's mother Agrippina was banished here, and Roman fish farms, tunnels and a harbour mole are still in use. Ponza's tufa is so soft that whole houses are carved into it. Mussolini was imprisoned here in 1943. Anchorage: Several bays give shelter from most directions; the harbour is small and busy in August. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
