Two-thirds of a 17th-century English colonial city on the harbour floor, brick buildings still standing, streets, wells and a staggering artefact record including a pocket watch stopped at 11:43, the moment of the earthquake. Archaeologists call it the only sunken city in the Western Hemisphere comparable to Pompeii. Port Royal was the pirate capital of the Caribbean, Henry Morgan's base, called 'the wickedest city on earth'. On 7 June 1692 an earthquake and tsunami dropped 33 acres of it into the harbour in minutes and killed around 2,000 people, with 3,000 more dying afterwards. Many at the time read it as divine judgement. Anchorage: Kingston Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with excellent shelter. Diving on the site requires permission from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
