Whale sharks feeding at the surface in any month of the year, reef mantas queueing at cleaning stations on Manta Reef, humpback whales passing through the winter, and a fishing-village beach where the boats still launch through the surf. Inhambane is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on the East African coast, an Arab dhow port that Vasco da Gama called Terra da Boa Gente in 1498. The manta and whale shark research done off Tofo produced much of what is known about both species in the western Indian Ocean. Anchorage: Inhambane bay is the shelter on this coast; the Tofo beach itself has none. Hazards: Surf launches through the break in an inflatable, that is how every dive here starts, and real current on the offshore reefs.
