A long sand bay with a working salt pond behind it, beach bars that anchor the island's music scene, and, a few miles out, the marine-park cays that are the real reason to bring a boat. Anguilla had no plantation economy worth the name because it is flat, dry and thin-soiled, which is why it stayed a fishing and boatbuilding island. Its racing boats are a national obsession and the anchorage is where they launch. Anchorage: Sand holding in 3-8m with plenty of room, a dinghy dock and shore services, the principal anchorage of the island and where you clear in before going anywhere else. Little Bay and Rendezvous Bay are the quiet alternatives once you are legal. Hazards: Northerly swell makes this uncomfortable to untenable in winter ground seas. Anguilla requires clearance before moving to the cays.
