A 212m Italian liner collapsing on her starboard side in dark, cold Atlantic water. Once famous for retrieving first-class china and the ship's bell; now progressively flattening, with the hull collapsed since the 2010s. Collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm in fog off Nantucket in July 1956 and sank the next morning; 46 died, but the 11-hour sinking allowed 1,660 to be rescued in one of the great sea rescues. Her loss drove radar-plotting reforms across the industry. Anchorage: Open Atlantic, 50nm offshore, charter vessels only, weather-critical. Hazards: Cold, dark, current-swept, deteriorating and genuinely dangerous, the 'Mount Everest of wreck diving' has killed a number of experienced divers.
