A British steamer broken across the reef in 5-9m, boilers, ribs, hull plating and the propeller shaft spread wide and thickly overgrown, with dense fish life. Shallow, bright and easy, which is why it is Florida's most-visited underwater preserve. Launched in England in 1898, she left Philadelphia on 20 May 1900 for Havana with 5,000 tons of coal and hit the reef six days later; all hands survived. Salvaged, then used as a US bombing target in WWII. Became Florida's fifth Underwater Archaeological Preserve in June 1994 and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Anchorage: Mooring buoys only, on the Pompano Drop Off outside the second reef. Day trip from Hillsboro, Pompano or Fort Lauderdale. Hazards: Gulf Stream drift; it is a protected archaeological preserve, removing anything is a crime.
