The most dramatic islands in Britain to 430m sea cliffs, the highest in the UK, and the sea stacks of Stac an Armin and Stac Lee holding the world's largest northern gannet colony, around 60,000 pairs. Ashore, the abandoned village street with its stone cleits. Underwater, clear Atlantic water with kelp forests and huge sea caves. Inhabited for 4,000 years by a community that lived on seabirds, climbing the cliffs barefoot for fulmar and gannet. The last 36 residents asked to be evacuated in August 1930. A dual UNESCO World Heritage Site for both nature and culture, one of very few in the world. Anchorage: Village Bay is the only option and is untenable in easterlies, 41nm from the nearest land, so you need a solid forecast both ways. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
