Seven wooden houses standing on pilings in the middle of open water with the Miami skyline on the horizon behind them, a genuinely surreal sight and the most distinctive image in Biscayne Bay. Bonefish and permit on the surrounding flats, and water shallow enough to stand in. Started in 1933 when 'Crawfish Eddie' Walker built a shack on stilts where gambling and drinking sat outside county jurisdiction. It grew to 27 buildings and clubs where 1950s Miami society drank; Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of it in 1992. Seven remain, now managed inside Biscayne National Park and leased for public use, protected but permanently precarious. Anchorage: Shallow sand and seagrass flats inside Biscayne National Park. Shoal-draught only, and seagrass scarring carries penalties, use marked channels and a rising tide. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
