Lateen-rigged wooden dhows, a design essentially unchanged for a thousand years, sailing across an orange sun in front of a coral-stone city, while the Forodhani night market fires up on the seafront. Then Mnemba Atoll's reefs and Chumbe Island's coral park a short sail away. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the historic hinge of the Indian Ocean monsoon trade, cloves, ivory and, for centuries, the East African slave trade, whose last open market closed in 1873. The dhows still work the same monsoon cycle that carried them to Oman and India. Anchorage: Open roadstead off Stone Town, exposed and busy with dhow and ferry traffic. Better shelter off Changuu (Prison Island). Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
