Small reefs and rock pools around four islets, with ancient stone and lead anchors lying where ships lost them, shipwreck timbers and pottery in the sand, and enough fish and octopus to keep the snorkelling interesting between the archaeology. Tel Dor was a Canaanite and then Phoenician port, later Greek and Roman, and the seabed off it is one of the richest maritime archaeological sites in Israel, the anchors alone span millennia. The Israeli law is simple, look, photograph, leave. Anchorage: The bays behind the islets have sheltered small craft for three thousand years and still do in settled weather. Hazards: Surge around the islets and archaeological material that must be left in place.
