Five uninhabited islands inside a horseshoe reef, so you lie at anchor in 4m of clear turquoise with the Atlantic breaking a quarter-mile to windward and no land between you and Africa. A protected turtle-watching zone where green turtles graze seagrass at snorkel depth, plus reef snorkelling on the Horseshoe itself. Declared a marine park in 1998 and now managed with mooring zones and a ranger presence. The beach barbecue boats, lobster grilled on the sand at Petit Bateau, are an institution. The Pirates of the Caribbean films used these waters. Anchorage: The classic, anchored in open turquoise water with nothing to windward but a breaking reef. Park moorings in the turtle zone; park fee payable. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
