The picture that sells Raja Ampat, dozens of mushroom-shaped karst islets in a jade lagoon, seen from the top of Mount Pindito after a sharp scramble up bare limestone. Blacktip reef sharks and juvenile fish in the shallows, manta in the channels, and total silence. Part of the Raja Ampat MPA network created from 2007 with local Papuan communities holding sasi, traditional periodic no-take rights, over specific reefs. Wayag is also a green turtle nesting area with a ranger post. Anchorage: Spectacular, sheltered inner lagoons. Remote, no services, no rescue; a genuine expedition anchorage. Park permits required. Hazards: No site-specific hazards noted, brief normally.
