Croatia's answer to Vis and almost nobody goes to 46 islands and islets, the clearest water in the Adriatic, sixteenth-century chimneys on the stone houses, and a designated Dark Sky park, the night sky here is the darkest in Croatia. The Lastovnjaci islets are an anchorage maze. Closed as a Yugoslav military zone until 1988, which is exactly why it is undeveloped. Lastovo's Poklad carnival, in which a straw effigy is sent down a rope through the village, commemorates the defeat of a Catalan pirate raid in the 15th century and has run continuously since. Anchorage: Skrivena Luka is one of the best natural harbours in the Adriatic, a near-landlocked bay. Zaklopatica has restaurants and buoys. Hazards: Exposed 30nm crossing from the mainland; the bura can be fierce in the channel.
