Lokrum is a forested island fifteen minutes from Dubrovnik's walls with a Benedictine monastery, free-roaming peacocks and the Dead Sea, a small saltwater lake connected to the sea that you swim in. Beyond it, the Elaphiti chain, Lopud's sand beach at Šunj, and Šipan's near-empty bays. Richard the Lionheart is said to have been shipwrecked on Lokrum in 1192 and to have funded Dubrovnik's cathedral in thanks. The Benedictines were expelled in 1808 and, legend has it, cursed the island, a story that follows every subsequent owner, including Maximilian of Mexico and the Habsburgs. Anchorage: Šipanska Luka is one of the best-protected bays in south Dalmatia. Lokrum is a day visit from a Dubrovnik berth. Hazards: Anchoring is prohibited around Lokrum's protected reserve, use Dubrovnik or the Elaphiti.
