Sanlorenzo and MAN Unite for Revolutionary Bi-Fuel Yachting

In an exciting development at Boot Düsseldorf, Sanlorenzo and MAN unveiled a groundbreaking project set to transform the yachting landscape. The collaboration aims to introduce the first bi-fuel green methanol propulsion system, featured in the ambitious 50 X-Space model. This innovative propulsion system is expected to cut navigation emissions by up to 70%, demonstrating a significant leap forward in eco-friendly maritime technology.

Aligned with Sanlorenzo's 'Road to 2030' strategy, this initiative underscores the company's commitment to sustainability and its leadership role in reducing environmental impact in the yachting industry. The goal of achieving the first carbon-neutral yacht by the decade's end is supported by pivotal global partnerships, emphasizing a proactive approach that surpasses existing global and European sustainability standards.

Key to this sustainability transformation is the strategic choice of methanol as a bi-fuel. Known for its feasibility in maritime applications, methanol is liquid at ambient temperatures, biodegradable, and safe to handle. Its availability in over 100 ports worldwide, without the need for extensive infrastructure updates, makes it an attractive alternative to traditional fuels. Moreover, when derived from renewable sources, methanol can achieve zero emissions, enhancing the realization of net-zero ambitions.

Sanlorenzo took significant strides in 2024 with the introduction of two pioneering models: the 50Steel, equipped with a green methanol fuel cell that transforms methanol into hydrogen for carbon-neutral electricity, and the BGH-HSV by Bluegame, the first hydrogen-powered chase boat. These innovations mark substantial progress in creating sustainable marine solutions.

The 50 X-Space project, scheduled for launch in 2027, is a pivotal step in Sanlorenzo’s sustainability journey. It integrates bi-fuel engines as part of the LIFE MYSTIC project, co-financed by the European Union. This initiative, involving collaboration with partners like Ranieri Tonissi and Nanni Industries, seeks to test and validate a combination of green methanol and diesel fuels, aiming for significant reductions in CO2 emissions and fossil fuel use.

Sanlorenzo is tasked with integrating these solutions into the yacht's design, ensuring full bi-fuel capability. Through this endeavor, the company positions itself at the forefront of sustainable yachting, reinforcing its commitment to technological advancement and fostering the growth of the alternative-fuel distribution network.
